Sometimes, you're hosting a party, and you're just like, "I need to build this menu out of crap I need to get rid of." Is that bad? I don't care. And I don't know how I accumulated so much white wine, because I do not drink white wine, but I had three bottles taking up my precious wine rack space (seriously, we have a small apartment) that some much velvetier reds would've liked to occupy. And God forbid I, like, drink something I don't want to drink.
One of these bottles was already being dedicated to cooking (80% as an ingredient in my favorite, Buzzfeed-famous mac & cheese), so the other two bottles needed to go somewhere. I've heard of white wine spritzers, though apparently am not white enough to have consumed one, and thought I'd give it a go for my upcoming Galentine's Day breakfast-for-dinner party (yeah, there were waffles — Leslie Knope would be proud).
One thing that's hard about Valentine's Day is that you want to make everything pink and red but a lot of pink and red flavors are summer flavors — strawberry, raspberry, pink lemonade, etc. But, fret not, it's blood orange season (if you hadn't already noticed from our blood orange donut recipe), and that gorgeous drink is red, and so are the ever-wintry pomegranates. Problem solved! A fancy, seasonal, red drink, complete with alcohol that was taking up space on my shelf that I can now fill with bottles of bourbon. Plus, it was darn delicious — maybe I will be buying white wine in the future?
