I'm all about some day trips lately. As much as I love hopping on a plane and seeing new things, it's sometimes just as awesome driving an hour outside of town to visit new places. Italy has a wealth of history and surprisingly different culture from region to region, and even town to town, so there is constantly something new to be seen.
One of my favorite day trips to do is to visit Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy formed by melted glaciers at the foot of the Alps. The entire lake is dotted with towns that are incredibly different from each other. We haven't been to them all, just Sirmione in the south, which has a pretty neat castle, and Riva del Garda in the north, which has some fantastic beaches and wind surfing.
The best thing to do around Lake Garda is just explore, take a walk around with a mountainous cone of gelato in hand, and lounge while you enjoy the crystal clear waters and the amazing view of the Alps.
