You know that one of the only things that gives us life during the summer is iced coffee. Like, how are we supposed to live our lives and look perky on hot coffee alone? No sir. So when I discovered caffé affogato, it was like a dream. Coffee with ice cream? It's like an iced coffee dessert superstar!
Caffé affogato is very typical in Italy, especially in the summer. You can't find them at all coffee shops, but you can find them at almost any gelato joint (being as almost every business in Italy is basically required to have a super fancy espresso machine, no matter how small). Sometimes they're served all extra-like, with whipped cream and cookies and in a fancy glass. And yeah, you can choose whatever gelato flavor you like — is coffee gelato + coffee too much? Never, we say.
If your neighborhood hasn't caught onto the magic of conjoining coffee and ice cream yet, it's super easy to make at home — you don't even ~have~ to have an espresso machine. A strong cuppa will do! Though we're partial to our Nespresso.
- 2 shots espresso (strong coffee will do in a pinch)
- 2 scoops gelato/ice cream (your choice!)
- Place two scoops gelato in your glass of choice (chilled glasses are best!). Pour espresso or strongly-made coffee over the gelato.
- Drink straight from the cup or eat with spoon and drink the remainder. Enjoy!
