You've probably heard murmurings on the Internet about magical fairy bread. Literally bread with sprinkles on it. At first we were like, "What?" and then we were like, "YAS," because it's so simple yet so amazing. Fairy bread sounds like it was both named and invented by a 4-year old. Which is probably the key to its greatness. But have you heard of hagelslag? You have, because it's the same thing.
When I was in Holland this past week (which you can read all about here, and I hope you like pictures of giant flower fields), my Dutch friend was taking us through the supermarket (because my travel buddy and I have an obsession with supermarkets, don't judge) and pointing out Dutch things that we should take home. While grabbing packets of stroopwafels, my friend pointed out these fun packets of sprinkles (labeled hagelslag) and joked about how the Dutch basically ate chocolate for breakfast because they put this on their bread and eat it in the morning. Um, what? An excuse to eat chocolate for breakfast under the pretense of how it was cultured to do so because the Dutch do? I was sold.
It took me forever to settle on a kind of sprinkle — I wanted the classic chocolate ones, but the colorful ones were so fun! And then I found a variety pack, meant especially for indecisive folks like me. It came with the classic jimmies, hagelslag, but also vlokken, which are larger chocolate flakes, and then vruchten hagel, which are maybe fruit flavored but really I just like them because they're pink. The Dutch also have muisjes, which are sprinkles in the form of sugar-coated anise seeds, but that sounded a bit intense for me. Maybe you're a bit more of a daredevil than I am with your sprinkle breakfast.
Fairy bread is actually the Australian name for the magic of sprinkles on bread, but apparently the Dutch need to duke it out with them for ownership of this best-breakfast idea. Hagelslag isn't as cute as "fairy bread," but is anything as cute as that name? Maybe you can throw someone off by being like, "We're having hagelslag for breakfast" and then they'll be expecting something healthy or like, some pickled herring, and then you'll whip up some butter and chocolate flakes and slap it on bread and really surprise them and make their day. Just an idea.
- Butter, softened
- Chocolate sprinkles
- White bread
- Spread butter on bread. Add sprinkles liberally. Eat & repeat!
