Life is not like a sitcom. To be more specific, I'm referring to my current out-of-date favorite, Friends. Life in New York is not like Friends. In 2015, the likelihood of your friends all living so close together as to have a neighborhood anything is like, zero. Unless you all, I don't know, make some kind of sick six-figure income.
Most days, that's probably a good thing, because if I had a friend who made jokes as terrible as Chandler's or who wore outfits as weird as, well, all of them, I'd probably have a hard time staying friends with them. But despite what you might see on your New York friends' Instagram feeds (brunches! rooftop bars! fancy donuts!), a lot of living here is the hard stuff. It's the commuting 100+ minutes a day on a packed train, or the staying home on a Friday night to haul your four loads of laundry down the street because you just don't know when else you'll find the time to do it.
Living in New York can be amazing (museums! art galleries! restaurants!) and it can be gross (rats on rats! all our apartments have creature infestations! piles of human and animal excrement!) but no matter if your opinion is positive or negative, living here is just a lot.
I decided I had to getaway from all the noise — however briefly — for a quick weekend trip upstate to Hudson. It's a beautiful two-hour train ride North along the Hudson via Amtrak, and totally doable without a car. If you ever get a chance, it's a great little spot to relax, wander and find some peace. It's precious beyond words — you can't walk two blocks without running into tiny potted succulents or an antique shop.
I wanted to take a piece of the calm I felt in Hudson home with me, which lead to the creation of some tiny plant illustrations and patterns (available as downloadable wallpapers for iPhone and desktop after the jump). I hope you feel the same zen I felt immersed in Hudson's pastel color palette and tiny plants when you're rushing about.
