If you haven't figured it out yet, 30 Rock rules the roost at Freckle and Fair. Though I'm not sure Katie and I will ever collectively fall as hard for a TV series again, Tina Fey's latest, "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," is pretty damn cute (with a hopelessly catchy theme song!)
Katie and I don't just love 30 Rock, we love talking about it. And not just quoting it endlessly (we can basically have an entire conversation in just "30 Rock" quotes), but also analyzing what it all means. Why is the supremely flawed Liz Lemon so beloved?
As Hanna Brooks Olsen astutely pointed out, everyone is Liz Lemon. We definitely identify with Liz's food addiction, and wanting to have it all. But unlike Liz, "Unbreakable's" Kimmy is bubbly, ever optimistic and fearless. She shows us you can be cute and powerful at the same time. And we should all aspire to be more like the Kimmys and the Leslie Knopes of the world, and a little less like the Lemons.
If you haven't seen the show yet, Kimmy Schmidt is rescued from an underground bunker where she has lived with three other women since she was in middle school after she was captured by a religious cult leader. She decides to up and move to New York, with nothing but her smile and her purple Jansport backpack, and the quirky comedy that Fey is known for happens along the way. We highly suggest sitting down with big bowl of candy and binge-watching it over the weekend on Netflix. As if you had other plans!
So here's our celebratory wallpaper ode to Kimmy. She's cute but tough and a bit rough around the edges — or, at Titus Andromedon would say, "pretty but tough like a diamond. Or beef jerky in a ball gown." She's been through some shit, but that doesn't mean she takes shit. Despite living underground for 15 years with an insane preacher, she gives some awesomely empowering advice. So if you're having a bad day, take her advice — just take it 10 seconds at a time.
And once you're done, continue the party with a 90's-tastic Kimmy-inspired playlist. Because nostalgia.
